DIFFICULT MATH PUZZLE
( Li'l Jolene's Mystery of the Missing Golf Balls )
PUZZLE 3
(Difficulty level - hard. Requires using simultaneous solution of 3rd order
non-homogeneous differential equations, or somethin' like that. You figure it
out. But it can be done in your head.)
T'was two days before Imbolc, the feast day of St. Brigit, the Irish patroness
for the birthing of calves and lambs. T'were also L'il Jolene's birthday. So
her Grandpa decided to take her to Lough Dublin, for her birthday, to play her
first round of golf. (Grandpa was some kinda golf nut but that's another
matter.) Grandpa got her a bucket of balls, since he knew she would probably
lose some. On the first hole L'il Jolene lost 1/3 of the balls, and on the
second hole she again lost 1/3 of the remaining balls in the bucket. On the
third hole she also lost 1/3 of the remaining balls, and on the fourth hole,
the same thing! Now t'weren't many balls left, so Grandpa divided them into 5
equal groups for the 5 remaining holes and had one ball left over - which he
put in his pocket. At the end of the ninth hole Lil Jo had lost all the balls,
so Grandpa took the one out of his pocket and gave it to her. (a.) What was
the least number of balls in the bucket before L'il Jolene teed off on her
first round of golf? (b.) Will L'il Jolene ever play golf again?
